This dynamic tool allows users to easily identify topics and questions from the Survey of Prison Inmates (SPI). Users can also map the questions from the most recent iteration of the SPI, specifically 2016, to those asked in the 1997 and 2004 surveys. The tool allows users to toggle through each section of the SPI questionnaire to examine question characteristics and response options across survey years. It also provides users with the ability to download their results.

The SPI is a national, cross-sectional survey of the state and sentenced federal prison populations that is conducted periodically by the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The SPI's primary objective is to produce national statistics on the state and sentenced federal prison populations across a variety of topics.

Select a Section and Question in the selector navigation to display the question table.

Toggle to other questions using the Previous Section Question and Next Section Question options.

If the 1997 or 2004 column of the question table is blank, then that means the 2016 survey question was not mapped to a similar question in the 1997 or 2004 survey.

Download the results for a specific question selected using the Download button below the question table.
